Summary

Just as piercing, sarcastic, insightful, and clarifying as ever。 The last chapter is beautifully moving。

。。。more

Good book, just the format made reading it a little cumbersome to me。 Lots of truth in this book。

I read this first when I was 18。 It was quite interesting to reread this after being adult for many years。 I had a much deeper understanding of what Lewis was talking about。

Honestly, I did not vibe with this book。 I hoped to really like it because I love C。S。 Lewis & the concept of letters written between demons is really entertaining on the surface。 I thought it would be a good 'religion' book without having to read a modern day pastor waxing on about redemption。But this didn't do it for me。 It wasn't entertaining enough to be good fiction & it didn't delve into topics deep enough to be a good philosophy/religion book。 I can't help but wonder who this was written Honestly, I did not vibe with this book。 I hoped to really like it because I love C。S。 Lewis & the concept of letters written between demons is really entertaining on the surface。 I thought it would be a good 'religion' book without having to read a modern day pastor waxing on about redemption。But this didn't do it for me。 It wasn't entertaining enough to be good fiction & it didn't delve into topics deep enough to be a good philosophy/religion book。 I can't help but wonder who this was written for - Christians are told anything less than absolute devotion & flawless piety is substandard, but nonbelievers are belittled and mocked for thinking outside the narrow box of Christianity。 It honestly just feels like a collection designed to make people feel ashamed。 Every complex, challenging human emotion is written as just the devil doin' his work, which isn't any fun to believe in。There were a lot of specific things in here that made me really frustrated - i。e。 Chapter 27 when he says, "Certainly we do not want men to allow their Christianity to flow over into their political life。 The establishment of anything like a really just society would be a major disaster。" This is satire, right? It couldn't be anything else。 But it still makes my blood boil to read it at all, because surely some people out there are reading that and nodding their heads along, feeling validated。TL;DR There are morsels of great human observation, but Lewis is limited from going any deeper into the conversation around it because of his chosen narrator。 He's still a great writer, but this book just wasn't for me。 。。。more

Satirical and clever。 The book contains letters from a demon (Screwtape) to his student, and nephew (Wormwood) regarding the soul of man (his patient) Wormwood is trying to gain。 His uncle points out errors his nephew is making and tips for earning his soul。 A look into how we become corrupted and what forces and thoughts affect our ideologies。

I first read this in the 90s and had very little appreciation for what I was reading。 I had a radically different experience the second time around。 This was a book group selection and the accompanying discussion always draws much more out of the text。 The more I read Lewis, the more I am in awe of his brilliance。

Unique and thought provoking。 CS Lewis has such wonderful perspectives on how to follow Christ。

For a Christian, especially a Christian male, this is simply a must-read, no questions asked。 For non-Christians, this book puts into perspective the constant battle going on during our time on this planet in such a way that will inspire deeper thought on the topic of Faith than perhaps ever before。 Lewis paints the picture in such a way that one can't help but walk away with a deeper understanding of how they feel and why they feel that way。 (This was my fourth time reading the book, over the c For a Christian, especially a Christian male, this is simply a must-read, no questions asked。 For non-Christians, this book puts into perspective the constant battle going on during our time on this planet in such a way that will inspire deeper thought on the topic of Faith than perhaps ever before。 Lewis paints the picture in such a way that one can't help but walk away with a deeper understanding of how they feel and why they feel that way。 (This was my fourth time reading the book, over the course of the last 20 years。 My fifth time through it will begin sooner than later。。。) 。。。more

This book is fascinating! There are parts that make me uncomfortable (okay, most of it), but it is in a really good way since it makes me think of places in my own life where I behave in the same way that Screwtape wants。 While it's not like this book is the Bible, it is still a really great wake up call for self-awareness in aspects of our lives that we may not often think about。 This book is fascinating! This quote stuck with me:“The use of fashions in thought is to distract the attention of men from their real dangers。 We direct a fashionable outcry of each generation against those vices of which it is least in danger and fix its approval on the virtue nearest you that vice we are trying to make endemic”。

Austin Van Vleck

Brilliantly written。 Lewis hits home so simply。

The screwtape letters takes one on a journey through through the soul。 Its elucidates the subtleties of temptation leading us towards heaven or hell, the higher or lower nature, the good the bad, lesser or greater aspects of life。 Whether Christian or heathen you'll be made better by these short letters。 The screwtape letters takes one on a journey through through the soul。 Its elucidates the subtleties of temptation leading us towards heaven or hell, the higher or lower nature, the good the bad, lesser or greater aspects of life。 Whether Christian or heathen you'll be made better by these short letters。 。。。more

I might have a few quibbles about the minutiae of the theology presented in the book, but the witty writing style more than makes up for it。Reading this book will definitely be of use to anybody willing to live a more virtuous life。 And I promise you won't bored。 I might have a few quibbles about the minutiae of the theology presented in the book, but the witty writing style more than makes up for it。Reading this book will definitely be of use to anybody willing to live a more virtuous life。 And I promise you won't bored。 。。。more

I'll be honest, I did not finish this。 I know it's a short read, however, I couldn't keep myself engaged。 Props to C。S。 Lewis and his efforts with this genre。 But, if I wanted to read something from the perspective of the spiritual realm, I would read the Darkness books by Frank Peretti。 I'll be honest, I did not finish this。 I know it's a short read, however, I couldn't keep myself engaged。 Props to C。S。 Lewis and his efforts with this genre。 But, if I wanted to read something from the perspective of the spiritual realm, I would read the Darkness books by Frank Peretti。 。。。more

What intrigues me most about this book was the idea of a demon giving away the secrets of hell。 To be clear, I don't believe in hill, but there is still a lot in common to the way life works, and C。S。 Lewis seems to have discovered that。 Screwtape represents the way life seems to come at us both to help us, and hinder us at the same time。Life can sometimes be diabolical in the subtlest of ways, and Screwtape Letters really points that outI love C。S。 Lewis, and I love his idea of good and evil。 H What intrigues me most about this book was the idea of a demon giving away the secrets of hell。 To be clear, I don't believe in hill, but there is still a lot in common to the way life works, and C。S。 Lewis seems to have discovered that。 Screwtape represents the way life seems to come at us both to help us, and hinder us at the same time。Life can sometimes be diabolical in the subtlest of ways, and Screwtape Letters really points that outI love C。S。 Lewis, and I love his idea of good and evil。 His god is compassionate, loving, genuine, real, and very much connected to those who suffer and need hope that life might be just a little better。While I don't agree with his view of chastity。。。 so what。 That doesn't change the fact that he really understands the challenges humans face, even if they are in the presence of God。 。。。more

Absolutely timeless, this book is an opportunity for necessary self-reflection and awareness。 With chilling insight, CS Lewis captures the enemy's mindset in such a compelling way, allowing the reader to recognize the ways they see this playing out in their own lives with deeper clarity。 A perfect first CS Lewis read and a classic I would recommend to anyone looking for an insightful spiritual read。 Absolutely timeless, this book is an opportunity for necessary self-reflection and awareness。 With chilling insight, CS Lewis captures the enemy's mindset in such a compelling way, allowing the reader to recognize the ways they see this playing out in their own lives with deeper clarity。 A perfect first CS Lewis read and a classic I would recommend to anyone looking for an insightful spiritual read。 。。。more

Fantastic book full of food for thought。 C。S。 Lewis not only has a sense of humor and a thorough knowledge of Christianity, but an uncommon understanding of human nature。 This book was hilarious at times and bone chilling at times。 It also hit too close to home at times。 For anyone (believers and non-believers) that wants to take an imaginative look at what Satan and his followers might be thinking about humankind, you will enjoy this one。 Glad to have read it!

I will be rereading this many times I think。 This is an understanding and perspective of God and spiritual attacks I don’t know if I’ll ever reach but I am so thankful for CS Lewis。

I love the concept of this book。 Even if is funny here and there, the veridicity (of the pfilosophical parts) is stunning。 Indeed, this is the book with the most number of advices that i have ever read, even if there are indirect advices。
